Summary

Nearly every government agreed to protect nature four years ago, and countries gathering for COP17 now face pressure to follow through on those commitments. So far, not a single target of the plan has been met. In August, more than 3,000 pike, roach, carp and rudd died in the River Wensum in Norwich. Investigators believe heavy rainfall flushed pollution into the river while heatwave conditions had depleted its oxygen. The Wensum has legal protection but is in poor ecological health. Only 11 of Britain's roughly 250 chalk rivers have formal protection, and many are damaged by sewage pollution and overextraction.
